Two journalists have been reportedly detained from Singhu Border by Delhi Police last night. Mandeep Punia, who was at Singhu Border for The Caravan to cover the follow up of the violence by what mainstream Media has identified as ‘local public’, was dragged and detained by Delhi Police.

Hartosh Singh Bal, the political editor of The Caravan, has tweeted that “we have been informed by addl DCP J. Meena that FIR 52/21 PS Alipur has been filed under sections 186, 332, 353 IPC, we’ll take whatever legal recourse is necessary.  We’ve learnt Mandeep had spent the morning trying to track down those from BJP claiming to be ‘locals’ at Singhu”.

Another journalist, Dharmender Singh from Online News India, was also detained by the police. The Indian Express reported last night that Singh was allowed to go later after he showed his identity card, while according to the Newslaundry both Punia and Singh were taken to Alipur police station. Sandeep Singh, a freelance journalist has now tweeted that Dharmendra Singh was released at 5 AM after signing an undertaking, while there is no update on Mandeep Punia.

Newslaundry has said that Mandeep began filming the conversation when a local resident wanted to cross the barricades and was talking to the police. However, an unidentified Police Officer has said to Indian Express, “he was detained because he wanted to break barricades and was also misbehaving with a security personnel.”

Kisan Ekta Morcha has also tweeted this morning about over 100 Farmers missing since Farmers Rally on Republic Day.

Swaraj Abhiyan President Yogendra Yadav has tweeted about Mandeep Punia saying, ‘Just not done. I have known Mandeep to be a passionate and committed journalist. Picking up someone like him, without any legal basis, is another instance of growing threat to free media. Release Mandeep Punia immediately.’

It has come to information that Mandeep Punia was arrested by Delhi Police and kept at Samaypur Badli Station.

Journalists have been protesting against the arrest.
