The Hijab-Saffron shawl issue has risen to controversy in colleges across many districts of the state. In Shimoga’s Government Pre-College an incident of insult to the national flag has happened, a young man hoisted the saffron flag on the mast used for hoisting tricolor on republic day and independence day celebrations.
Hundreds of students have protested against the hijab by wearing saffron shawls in various district colleges in Karnataka. One student from the a college in Shimoga climbed the pole and hoisted a saffron flag while protesting against allowing hijab on the college campus.
The rest of the students cheered the slogan. Holding saffron shawls in their hands and shouting slogans created further frenzy.

At this time stone petting started in the government college. Three students were injured in the incident. Students wearing saffron shawls are caught on stone cameras.
Shivamogga SP Laxmi Prasad and DC Selvamani visited the site of the incident and were trying to bring the situation under control. Holiday has been declared in all PU colleges across Karnataka as a precautionary measure.
Section 144 has been imposed in the area after the stone-pelting incident in Shimoga, Bagalkote and Davangere districts yesterday.
