US President Donald Trump ignored the COVID-19 pandemic for more than two months has suddenly woken up to the seriousness of the disease that has left more than 34,000 fatalities in the US alone. Now to overcompensate for his ignorance and idiocy he is behaving like a typical bully.
What started as a blame game accusing China of causing the Pandemic changed into bullying India into clearing the export of Hydroxyquinone or expect retaliation has shifted its finger to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
On April 15th Trump announced that US will halt funds to World Health Organisation (WHO) and accused the organization of mismanaging the COVID-19 pandemic and conspiring with china to suppress important information related to the Pandemic.
Trump has alleged that WHO endorsed the idea in early mid-January that “human to human transmission was not happening in spite of reports and clear evidence to the contrary and the delay in declaring it as a public emergency cost the US valuable time”.
The US contribution to the WHO’s annual budget of 5.6 billion dollars is 900 million dollars. Though Trump has not specified the amount that will be stopped, this decision has to pass the US Congress to come into effect.
Trump’s statements since the beginning of the Pandemic have drawn sharp criticism. Many believe that the United States government is trying to politicizing the WHO, the organization which does so much vital and important humanitarian work around the world. Especially at a time when their work is needed the most in the poorer countries. The leaders of the World Health Organization have warned that such a decision could result in a lot of deaths.
The WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that such statements might lead to more death. He said-
“Please do not politicize this virus. It exploits the differences you have at the national level. If you want to be exploited and if you want to have many more body bags then you do it”
Meanwhile, the ruling party the Republicans and the US Congress have also announced that they plan to have a congressional probe to investigate China for its role and possible culpability in the spread of coronavirus.
Conjectures are being made that Trump administration and republicans plan to blame China and the WHO for the spread of Pandemic after themselves failing to tackle the Pandemic spread and resulting deaths in US.
The latest move to halt funding to WHO will be the first step towards the “investigation” that would put the blame on China for the COVID-19 crisis.
The death toll in US refuses to slow down with New York city resorting to mass graves. Instead of providing better healthcare to its population the US President chooses to bellow at other countries and world organisations. This is nothing but diversion tactic on part of Trump administration.
To counter the claims of Trump administration, WHO and Beijing officials have released a timeline providing step by step information about how the pandemic was dealt from December onwards which show coordination and cooperation between Chinese officials and international bodies.
WHO is a well renowned organisation that does humanitarian works around the world and Trump administration accusing it of being complicit with China in this pandemic is not just ill times but immoral.
The management of COVID-19 needs all hands on the deck, all countries irrespective of their differences to come together, blame games, cover ups and investigations can wait for the time being.
