In the first-ever District Development Council (DDC) polls in J&K, while it looks like BJP is leading in Hindu dominated areas of Jammu, it is the regional parties that are leading in  Kashmir.

This is the first election since article 370 was abrogated in Jammu and Kashmir on 5th august 2019.

The Farooq Abdullah-led People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration has won nine of 20 districts in the first local polls in Jammu and Kashmir since it lost its special status and was turned into a Union Territory last year.

Currently, the Farooq Abdullah-led People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration has been leading in Kashmir with 110 seats of the total 280 seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is the single largest party, with wins and leads in 74 DDC seats. It is finding such strong leads through Hindu majority districts in the Jammu Division- Jammu, Udhampur, Kathua, and Samba, leading in 49 out of 56 DDC seats.

Reacting to the results, National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah said that people from Jammu as well as Kashmir have extended complete support to the Gupkar alliance and endorsed its plan seeking restoration of J-K’s special status by giving a befitting reply to the BJP in the DDC polls. “The BJP is the one which turned these elections as a referendum of its policy of 2019. I hope they have understood the desire of the people,” he said.

The CPI(M) has also won all five seats it contested for in the South Kashmir DDC Elections.

A tweet from CPI(M) puducherry unit said- “While all attention was riveted towards the BJP winning three seats in Kashmir, the CPI (M) sprung a surprise by winning all five seats it contested in south Kashmir in the District Development Council (DDC) polls.

The CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has consecutively won from the constituency as an MLA for the past three terms. Tarigami has never been a minister but has always been considered an influential politician in Kashmir.
