ABVP Member Arrested for Issuing Rape and Death Threats to Journalist Rohini Singh

The IG has said that the accused confessed that he had tweeted a threat to the journalist in anger against her style of reporting on the ongoing farmers’ agitation at the borders of Delhi.

The Rajasthan Police has arrested a Law Student for allegedly sending rape and death threats to the Journalist Rohini Singh.

Kapil Singh, the Law Student had been taken to a custody on Saturday by the Rajasthan Police under the Sections 506, 509 of Indian Penal Code and Section 67 (electornic transmission of obscene material) of IT Act. Kapil Singh is 26-year old and is associated with Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of RSS.

Rohini Singh, who is a journalist at The Wire, had tweeted on 26 January that she had been issued rape and death threats through replies on a tweet by @KViayan, with the twitter name Kapil Singh Viayan. She urged the Rajasthan Police and Ashok Gehlot to take action.

The Udaipur IG was quoted in Hindustan Times as saying that, “During his interrogation, the accused confessed that he had tweeted a threat to the journalist in anger against her style of reporting on the ongoing farmers’ agitation at the borders of Delhi“.

Rohini in her later tweets has said that disagreements can never be an excuse to threaten someone to rape or death. She has also tweeted that she would like the arrested man to be released after counseling because ‘it isn’t he who has sown these seeds of hate, or has made questioning a crime in democracy’.
