Provisional Accommodation to Khori Gaon Displaced: SC to Faridabad Corporation

Residents of Khori Gaon have been protesting the evictions, saying the police and forest authorities have been exploiting them for years by taking bribes.

The Supreme Court on Monday suggested that the Faridabad municipal corporation consider providing temporary accommodation for those displaced in the Khori Gaon evictions. This suggestion was for those residents who were living in unauthorised structures planned by the corporation.

A Division Bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice Dinesh Maheshwari made the suggestion with regard to those residents who have been evicted due to demolition of unauthorised structures that have been planned by the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad at Khori Gaon in Faridabad and are eligible for rehabilitation.

More permanent rehabilitation can be planned after document verification to see who is eligible.

So far, the municipal corporation has not finalised what kind of rehabilitation will be provided to these families. Given the amount of time it may take to provide permanent rehabilitation, the bench suggested this alternative.

“What we mean is, If an application is received today with minimum requirements which are good enough to process files, move forward and provisional allotment may be made to that person, so you don’t have to wait for weeks till you take a final decision, with an undertaking that if the genuineness of documents isn’t established the person will vacate,” the bench said, according to LiveLaw.

In late August, when the Supreme Court had adjourned the case for two weeks, it had said that it wanted the eviction process to be completed in that period.

On July 7, the Supreme Court had directed the authorities concerned to remove all illegal structures that came up on forest land in Khori Gaon with six weeks, rejecting pleas for a stay on demolition.

Residents of Khori Gaon have been protesting the evictions, saying the police and forest authorities have been exploiting them for years by taking bribes. Now, they argue, they need proper rehabilitation if they are to be evicted.
