Tragedy King of Hindi Cinema, Dilip Kumar Passes Away at 98

Veteran Actor Dilip Kumar passed away this morning after prolonged illness. He was 98.

Dilip Kumar was regarded as one of the greatest actors of Hindi Cinema.

Dilip Kumar was admitted to ICU of Hinduja hospital. He was in and out of hospital for last one month.

“He passed away due to prolonged illness at 7.30 am,” Dr Jalil Parkar, who had been treating the actor, told PTI.

He is survived by his wife and actress, Saira Bano.

“With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return,” family friend Faisal Farooqui posted from the actor’s Twitter handle.

Dilip Kumar was born as Mohammad Yusuf Khan and ruled the heart of cinema goers with his natural acting style for over five decades. Born in Peshawar, British India, Kumar spent his childhood in Nasik and moved to Bombay at an early age to earn a living.

He started his career in 1944 in the movie Jwar Bhata.

He earned acclaim for his portrayal of dramatic roles and was also known as the ‘Tragedy King”.

He was also credited for bringing a distinct form of method acting technique to cinema. Kumar holds the record for most wins for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and was also the inaugural recipient of the award.

His historical movie Mughal-E-Azam is the highest-grossing film (equivalent to 2000 crores in 2015) in India when adjusted for inflation.

Government of India honoured Kumar with the Padma Bhushan in 1991, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. The Government of Andhra Pradesh honoured Kumar with NTR National Award in 1997.

The Government of Pakistan conferred Kumar with Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award in Pakistan, in 1998.
