Trump becomes the first US President to be impeached for a second time

The move by the Republican members marked the largest number of lawmakers to ever vote to impeach a president from their own party. This is in contrast to Trump's impeachment in 2019.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump became the first President in US history to be impeached for a second time by the House. The move was in response to President Trump’s role in inciting last week’s riot at the US Capitol.

Ten Republicans broke rank to vote for impeachment, marking the largest number of lawmakers to ever vote to impeach a president from their own party.

Trump released a statement following the historic vote but did not mention impeachment.

President Trump is the first US president to be impeached twice

With a final House vote of 232-197, President Trump becomes the first to be impeached a 2nd time. Reportedly this is the most bi-partisan impeachment in history including the impeachment of Richard Nixon. 10 Republicans joined the Democrats to approve the measure.
The move by the Republican members marked the largest number of lawmakers to ever vote to impeach a president from their own party. This is in contrast to Trump’s impeachment in 2019. At that time all House Republicans voted against both articles of impeachment.

The Senate will not convene until next week to hold a trial for the president. Speaker Pelosi named nine House impeachment managers for Trump’s Senate trial.
While impeachment won’t force Trump from office –Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said Trump won’t face his trial until after President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in next week – the vote was a visceral response from lawmakers in both parties furious at Trump after a deadly pro-Trump mob overran Capitol Police, ransacked the US Capitol and put the lives of Vice President Mike Pence and lawmakers in danger last week.
