Amid the political turmoil in Puducherry, Kiran Bedi was removed from the post of Lieutenant Governor by the President.

With the election looming, the administrative crisis in Puducherry has intensified. The opposition, BJP, has started a no-confidence motion against the Narayana Swamy-led Congress government. With the resignation of one more MLA, there are concerns that the Congress government will not be able to prove a majority in the confidence vote.

Kiran Bedi had tweeted earlier in the day thanking the people of Puducherry. She stated- “Whatever was done, was a sacred duty fulfilling my constitutional and moral responsibilities.

The Governor of Telangana, Tamilisai Soundararajan, has been given the additional charge of Puducherry.

Political Crisis in Puducherry

Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Puducherry today, on February 17, 2021, for his election campaign. With the resignation of four Congress MLAs, the government has lost a simple majority. Just hours before Rahul Gandhi arrives in Puducherry for his election campaign, two more MLAs withdrew their support for the government yesterday, following former Puducherry Congress president Namasivayam and minister Krishna Rao.

With this, the majority of the Congress government in the 30-member assembly was reduced to 14. The NR Congress-BJP-AIADMK alliance also has the support of 14 people. The BJP-led opposition is trying to bring a no-confidence motion against the government.

Although Narayanaswamy was ready to resign before the no-confidence motion, the High Command intervened and reversed the decision. The Congress alleges that the BJP threatened MLAs to resign and is butchering democracy. The MLAs who left the Congress are in the process of joining the BJP. The Congress leaders themselves had come out against Narayana Swamy in connection with the elections. It was alleged that the seat allocation was not given due consideration.
