The Delhi Commission for Women has summoned the Deputy Commissioner of Police  (DCP) of the cyber cell following the failure of Delhi police to provide the Commission with the necessary information in the Sulli Deals case.

On July 4, an app called ‘Sulli Deals’ was created where pictures of Muslim women picked up from the internet were uploaded.

The app offered the user the option ‘Find your sulli deal of the day’ and when selected it would reportedly present the user with the photo of a Muslim woman, along with their name and Twitter handle.

On August 2, following widespread outrage over the issue and many women reaching out to the Delhi Women’s Commission, the women’s Commission had issued a notice to the Delhi Police seeking information on the case.

The police responded to the Commission’s notice on August 3 and said that the Uttar Pradesh police team has not received any complaint regarding the Sulli Deals case.

However, the Commission had refuted the Delhi police’s claim by saying that the Commission itself received more than 250 complaints.

“This reply is totally unsatisfactory as the commission itself had annexed copies of more than 250 complaints received in the commission, with its notice, and had asked for specific point-wise information with respect to the case,” the summons order from Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal read.

The DCP along with the investigating officer has been summoned on August 18 for not providing satisfactory information on the matter to the Delhi Commission for Women.

Earlier, based on a complaint received on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal against the app, the Delhi Police had filed an FIR against unknown people under Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).

A separate FIR was also filed in the case by the Noida police.
