SKM Announces Nationwide Agitation In Support Of Wrestlers’ Protest

Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Saturday announced a nation-wide agitation program in support of the women wrestlers who are protesting against the BJP government’s inaction on the sexual harassment allegations against WFI President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Saran Singh. 

The wrestlers have been on an indefinite protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar since 23rd April 2023. In light of the Supreme Court’s dismissal of their petition as well as harassment by the Delhi Police, the protesting wrestlers have formed two committees to decide further course of action.

In their press release, Senior leaders of SKM from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh stated that hundreds of farmers will be visiting the protest site at Jantar Mantar on May 7 to extend support and solidarity to the wrestlers. 

Public meetings and protest marches will be held from May 11 to May 18 in all state capitals and in district and taluk headquarters. They plan to burn the effigy of Singh and his supporters during this agitation.

Demanding the immediate arrest of Singh, SKM Leaders will also lead a deputation to important administrative and political persons such as the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, Union Sports Minister and Home Minister.

The statement further condemned the Delhi Police’s inaction and insensitivity in dealing with the matter and ensuring in-camera proceedings. The Delhi Police has denied basic civil rights to the protesting sportspersons, such as cutting out access to water and electricity, denying access to bedding and subjecting them to harassment.

Earlier last week on April 30, SKM held a National Meeting at Delhi where more than 200 farmers leaders of constituent organisations attended. During this meeting as well, SKM extended firm and unequivocal support to the protesting wrestlers and demanded that Singh be arrested immediately.
