A galaxy of farm leaders from Samyukt Kisan Morcha was present in Kolkata today to reach out to farmers of West Bengal. These leaders appealed to Bengal’s voters to punish BJP in the upcoming elections, for its anti-farmer attitude and behaviour. After addressing a Press Conference in the forenoon, they also addressed a large public gathering in the West Bengal Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat at Ram Lila Park.

A letter was released by SKM to farmers in 5 election-bound states. This included a Bangla letter released in Kolkata to be carried to all constituencies in the state by farmers’ organisations.

Meanwhile, it is reported that potato farmers in Hooghly district of Bengal started an agitation for MSP.

SKM opposes govt attempts to force Electricity amendment Bill 2021

Samyukt Kisan Morcha opposed any move by the Government of India to introduce the Electricity Amendments Bill 2021 and demanded that the Government make public the draft of the Bill that is listed for tabling in the ongoing Parliament session. Any amendments to the Electricity Act will clearly violate the commitment made by the central government to the farmer unions to withdraw its Draft Bill.

The undemocratic, high-handed repressive attitude of Tamil Nadu Police was witnessed once again when it stopped a Cycle Rally in support of the farmers’ protests that started in Kanyakumari. SKM condemns this.

The government, instead of accepting the demands of the farmers, is constantly harassing people who are supporting the farmers’ agitation. Sukhpal Singh Khaira of Punjab Ekta Party is being harassed through an unconstitutional ED raid and SKM strongly condemns the same. Sukhpal Khaira, who has been continuously demanding an inquiry into the death of Navrit Singh, who was killed by a police bullet on January 26, is now being targeted by the government for his active role in the farmer’s movement.

Rallies/Mahapanchayats conducted all over India

Rallies and protests are being conducted regularly all over India in support of the farmers’ movement. One such rally was organized in Jehanabad on the occasion of the 123rd birth anniversary of Swami Sehajanand Saraswati. There are 7 “Kisan Yatras” that are travelling in almost all districts of Bihar before they converge at the Legislative Assembly on 18th March 2021.

A Kisan Mahapanchayat was organized today in Banda, Uttar Pradesh. The administration had given permission for the panchayat 7 days ago but last night the police and administration overthrew the pandal and a heavy police force was deployed to prevent the farmers from reaching Banda. Despite this, a large number of farmers gathered in front of the Collector Office in Banda and took a pledge to take forward this movement to all districts of Bundelkhand and raise the issue of the agricultural laws and MSP Guarantee Act.
