Dalit and labor activist Nodeep Kaur, who has been in custody for a month and a half, has been granted bail in two cases and a third FIR has been filed against him.

Haryana police have arrested 23-year-old Punjab-based Dalit labor activist Nodeep Kaur while she was protesting against the famer laws at the Singhu Border.

Nodeep was granted bail on February 2 by the Sessions Court in Sonepat, Haryana. She is currently being held at the Karnal Prison in Haryana.

Nodeep sister posted on twitter that Nodeep got bail in two FIRs.

Yesteday on 14th Feb., Punjab Women’s commission chairperson Manisha Gulati met Home Minister Amit Shah to appraise HM about the human rights violations committed against Nodeep. Today Manisha Gulati went to meet Nodeep but was denied permission to meet her by the Karnal Jail superintendent.

Nodeep’s advocate Jatinder Kumar said, today she has been granted bail in FIR No.26.She had already got bail in FIR no.649. Her bail application in FIR no.25 which includes section 307 (attempt to murder), was filed in Punjab and Haryana High Court today and hearing is expected after a week.

The labour rights activist was arrested on January 12, 2021, under a number of charges including rioting while armed with a deadly weapon, unlawful assembly, causing hurt to a public servant, assault and criminal force, trespass, extortion, snatching, criminal intimidation, and lastly the Section 307, attempt to murder.

The way Nodeep’s case was handled raises questions about the transparency of the police and legal system. Nodeep’s lawyer was not made aware about all the details of her case. The lawyer did not know about all the FIRs that have been put on her. He was only aware of two FIRs and hence filed for bail application on the two FIRs. How there was another FIR that he got to know much later. Another bail plea has been filed on the third FIR.

Many people including US lawyer Meena Harris, actor Diljit Dosanjh, actress Swara Bhaskar and several human rights activists have called for the release of Nodeep Kaur.
