Narsamma, Legendary Dalit Woman Leader of Jagrutha Mahila Sanghatane, Passes Away

She was unwell and hospitalised for over three months after a gallbladder surgery and post surgery complications.

Narsamma, one of the stalwart leaders of Jagrutha Mahila Sangathane, passed away at 48 years of age on 25th January 2021, early morning. She was unwell and hospitalised for over three months after a gallbladder surgery and post surgery complications. Her condition deteriorated last week despite all efforts to restore her health. Narsamma was a firebrand activist and an able voice for Dalit women’s rights and dignity. Narsamma leaves behind a legacy of stuggle for justice and freedom from oppression and for over two decades she has been the backbone of JMS in building and strengthening grassroots collectives, instilling spirit into labour movements as a charismatic leader who led from the front with courage and integrity. She was an integral part of several social movements across Karnataka like Grakoos, Karnataka Janarogya Chaluvali, Madhyapana Nishedha Horata (Anti liquor movement) and People’s Health Movement. Her legacy will continue to guide movements against injustice in future and beyond.
