As announced by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions, May Day was celebrated as Majdoor Kisan Ekta Diwas on the borders of Delhi on 1st May which also marks the 156th Day of the historic Farmers Movement happening at the Delhi borders and across the country. The farmers movement and labour movement across the country have decided to further strengthen the people’s united struggle against the anti-farmer, anti-labour and anti-people policies of the government. They have noted that the three farm laws introduced and the repeal of labour code and thereby privatization is precarious to the people.
Protests at Delhi Borders:
On the joint call of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Central Trade Unions, May Day was celebrated as “Mazdoor-Kisan Ekta Divas” across the country. Thousands of labourers reached to protest site on the borders of Delhi and supported the farmers movement and their demands. From the central trade union to the local labour organisations, leaders expressed their thoughts on farmers protest, labour resistance, and May day.
Farmer and Labour movement leaders said that under the guise of Corona, the central government attacked the farmers and labourers directly. At the time when the country is going through this pandemic, instead of fighting that cause, the government has undertakenken the task of creating many pandemics like three farm laws and four labour codes. Speaking about the current peasant movement, the leaders said that the BJP and allied parties, scared of the farmer-labour unity, also tried to incite the workers against the farmers and wanted to create conflict among two main productive forces. In many ways, efforts have been made to keep the workers away from this movement, but the workers are equally suffering, so they too are equally contributing to this movement with the farmers.
Speaking on the labour code and farm laws, the leaders said that the Essential Commodities Amendment Act is a direct and sharp attack on the livelihood of the workers. The future of labourers will directly go into the hands of the private sector. At the same time, the APMC bypass act and contract farming law will also increase the exploitation of workers and will reduce employment opportunities. Talking about the situation today, the leaders of the central trade unions said that the way the government machinery has failed to deal with the Corona pandemic today shows the failure of this government. The new labour codes have been created by bypassing the health and social security of the workers. Vaccination and other medical services are not available for the workers and the poor during the Corona period. The government should stop privatization and corporatization and should invest in government institutions.
“Samyukta Kisan Morcha congratulates all the workers, farmers and common citizens for the successful organization of today’s “Mazdoor Kisan Unity Day” and hopes to fight together in the coming time.” read the press note issued by the farmer leaders on behalf of Samyukta Kisan Morcha.
