Bengaluru: Progressive organisations condemning the dilution of the land reforms act and opposing the ‘anti-labor’ and ‘anti-farmer’ legislations of the government launched a massive protest on the first day of the legislative session that began on Monday.

Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha ( karnataka state farmers organisation), Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, labour organisations and a total of 29 organisations have launched a joint struggle under the banner of “Aikya Horata”  (United Struggle).

Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav and Kavitha Kuruganti of Alliance for Sustainable & Holistic Agriculture (ASHA) have also joined in the protest against the anti-farmer policies of the government.

The protesters who have strong objections against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government policy of adopting an ordinance route to bring in legislation have decided to hold a parallel session against the current legislative session.

The government taking advantage of the present COVID-19 situation has been pursuing anti-people policies and has taken the ordinance route. The changes brought to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act were against the spirit of the land reforms. These reforms were detrimental to the interest of the farmers and had been brought only to favor the capitalists, the protesters alleged and took out a massive protest rally at Freedom Park.

The ruling government without holding any discussion regarding the amendments to APMC (Agriculture Produce Market Committee) Act and Karnataka Land Reforms Act had been subverting the democratic principles. These amendments would result in small and marginalized farmers becoming labourers.

The protesting organisations will continue protesting until the government withdraws the changes brought to the said Acts.

The parallel people´s session will start at 2.30 PM today.
