Expressing anguish over the creation of ruckus and tension in Belagavi district by Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES), various pro-Kannada organizations have called for Karnataka Bandh on December 31 demanding the government to ban the organization.

The pro-Kannada organisations are enraged after the incident of MES and members of Shiv Sena burning Kannada flag, damaging the statue of Sangolli Rayanna (freedom fighter) and desecrating the portrait of 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara in parts of Karnataka and Kolhapur of Maharashtra.

The members of MES and Shiva Sena were also accused of damaging the vehicles of Karnataka registration in Maharashtra.

Angry over the regular incidents of MES which Kannada organisations and their supporters believe are aimed at creating trouble in Belagavi district, the members of Kannada organisations are now up in arms. They have been protesting against MES across the State by holding rallies and burning the effigies.

The organisations are now exerting pressure on the BJP government to ban MES in Karnataka.

The matter got reverberated even in the assembly session in Belagavi where not only the opposition parties but even several leaders of the ruling party condemned the act and criticised MES for hurting the sentiments of Kannadigas.

Meanwhile, various Kannada organisations have decided to intensify their agitation and have called for Karnataka Bandh on December 31 demanding the ban on MES.

“ It is the matter of self esteem of every Kannadiga of Karnataka. We have decided to take this matter seriously and all other Kannada organisations have extended support for the Bandh. The Bandh will be observed between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm of December 31. The organisations are also seeking support of owners of private establishments of the State for the success of the Bandh”, said veteran Kannada activist, Vatal Nagaraj.

He claimed that all pro-Kannada organisations are united in this matter and there are no rifts. Since MES has hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas and burnt Kannada flag, it is the moral duty of every Kannadiga to support the Bandh to demand the banning of MES, he said.

Nagaraj said that on December 31, a mega protest rally will be taken out in Bengaluru from Town hall where lakhs of people are expected to join. He has appealed to people to join in large numbers.

Asserting that it is not a normal protest, he said that it is the matter of pride of Kannada.  “ Therefore, we are appealing to leaders of all the parties, BJP, Congress and the JD(S) to extend all support and cooperation for the Bandh.
