In the latest case of hindutva mob lynching Tabrez Ansari, a 24 year old man was beaten badly last week. He was accused of stealing a motorcycle. He was tied to a pole and beaten for hours. Videos of the beating that have been widely circulated show his attackers forcing him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Hanuman”. He was handed over to the police and was in police custody for four days. During this time his family was not allowed to meet him. According to his family, police delayed taking Tabrez to the hospital. He was declared dead when brought to a hospital on Saturday. The family has demanded action against all concerned, including the police and the doctor.
Tabrez was married one and a half months ago. His wife, Shahista Parveen says- “He was mercilessly beaten as he was Muslim. I don’t have anybody, no in-laws. My husband was my only support. I want justice,”
Eleven men have been arrested and two police officers suspended amid nation-wide outrage over the fatal mob attack . PM modi broke his silence over the issue and expressed his sadness about the killing.
Hate Crime Watch, a database of hate crimes across India by FactCheckIndia, reported 14 incidents of hate crime in Jharkhand from 2016 to 2019. The attack on Tabrez Ansari was the eleventh such incident of hate crime this year. In 59 per cent of the cases, the victims have been Muslims and 28 per cent of the incidents have been over cow-related issues.

Some of the states have also passed laws against lynching but it seems to be ineffective when the mob is instigated on emotional issues like religion, cow and nowadays child lifting. Madhya Pradesh’s government passed a law to prevent cow-related vigilantism in June 2019. […]
