Samyukta Horata (an umbrella organisation of many farmers organisations across Karnataka), Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene have given a call for Mahapanchayat in Shivamogga district, tomorrow, March 20, 2021. Mahapanchayats are being organised across the country by the farmers protesting against the three farm laws. These large gatherings are being attended not only by farmers but all those who are in support and solidarity of the ongoing farmers’ movement.
Various political parties have supported the Mahapanchayat. Shivamogga metropolitan opposition leader Yogesh said, ‘The farmers’ movement is a success. Senior farmers remember Rakesh Tikayat’s father coming to Shivamogga. Farmers are saying that if Rakesh Tikayat can come to Shivamogga and fight for us, it is our duty to give him a day.’
This is the first Mahapanchayat in Karnataka.
One of the members of the organising committee of the Mahapanchayat, Srikant spoke to Gauri Media and said, ‘This is a congregation of the farmers and of all those who eat. The farmers who are sitting at the borders of Delhi have been protesting for more than 110 days now. This movement is not limited to Delhi and people from across the country must participate in this movement. With such an intention we are organising this Mahapanchayat.’ These Mahapanchayats that are being organised across the country are dismantling the discourse of the protests being Punjab centric that the ruling BJP government at the centre and the mainstream media have been pushing forward.
Darshan Pal, Rakesh Tikait and Yudhvir Singh, the farmer leaders under whose leadership the movement at Delhi borders is being carried on would be addressing the Mahapanchayat along with the farmer leaders from the state. Mr. Darshan Pal will be addressing scholars, public intellectuals and media in Bengaluru on March 21, 2021 Rakesh Tikait and Yudhvir Singh will be preceding another Mahapanchayat in Haveri on the same day.
