Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister and DMK leader K. N. Nehru reportedly made racist remarks targeting the working class populace from Bihar working in Tamil Nadu.

Nehru claimed that people from Bihar were taking the job opportunities away from Tamilians and went on to claim that Biharis are less intelligent than Tamilians.

While speaking at an employment camp hosted by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) office in Tiruchirappalli, Nehru on July 25, the minister particularly targeting the working class Bihari populace in the Tamil Nadu said that ‘Lalu Prasad Yadav as Railway Minister had packed the Railways with Biharis, especially at lower-level jobs, even though Biharis were less brainy than Tamils,’ the Outlook India reported.

The minister who holds a high position in M.K. Stalin’s cabinet instead of emphasising the need to work around the issue of job scarcity in the state went ahead with the anti-migrant worker narrative of ‘outsiders’ stealing job alternatives from the local population in Tamil Nadu.

Nehru exaggerating the prevalent anxieties around migrants who come from Northern parts of the country, in the state said that ‘more than 4,000 Biharis are working at the Golden Rock Workshop of Southern Railway in Tiruchy. Similarly, most of the gatekeepers at railway crossings are Biharis.’

The DMK leader, who is a member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Tiruchirappalli West constituency further said that ‘It is all due to the handiwork of Lalu Prasad Yadav. When he was railway minister he had all his fellow Biharis pass the railways exams by copying and then got them appointed in railway jobs. These people know neither Tamil nor Hindi and lack the brains that we Tamils have. Yet they are working in Tamil Nadu.’
