Congress on tuesday demanded a supreme court monitered judicial probe into the Pegasus spyware issue follwing findings that opposition leaders, ministers and Journalists have been major targets of the Isreal-based NSO group’s surveillance project.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge, Congress, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president D K Shivakumar, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal in a joint press conference said that the Modi government is trying to destroy constitutional institutions.

Questioning the moral responsibility of Home Minister Amit Shah, opposition leaders demanded his resignation, affirming that the NDA government’s act was nothing but a murder of democracy.

KC Venugopal, congress Rajya Sabha MP stated that Congress plans to hold “Rajbhavan Chalo” protests outside the Raj Bhawan’s in all states this thursday asking for a high-level probe into the issue. He also said that the NDA might have used this spyware to bring down the governments in Manipur, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. “The simple question before the country today is… who is safe in this country? Everybody has to be careful in this country nowadays. There is no privacy.” says Venugopal adding on that BJP shouldn’t be involved in the dirty politics of horese-trading and usage of ‘hook or crook’ methods.

With recent reports from The wire indicating that the phone numbers of Karnataka’s Former CM H.D Kumaraswamy, deputy chief minister G Parameshwara, an aide of senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah were possibly selected as targets, there is a speculation that this software was involved in the toppling of the Congress-JDS Coalition government back in 2019.

Despite the diffciulty in establishing whether the Karnataka’s then ruling party’s leaders’ phone was subject to attack or only an attempt to do so was made, the timing of the targetting co-incides with the political power game that was unfolding in 2019.

“The party which is in power at the Centre should not play such dirty games and indulge in such crimes” says  Vidhan Sabha opposition leader Siddaramiah.

Lok sabha Congress leader, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said “This is just the tip of the iceberg. How many more names… and how many more disgusting things they have done… all are yet to come out.”
