Since the Hindu nationalist BJP came to power in the center, one of its major attacks has been on academic freedom in educational institutions in the country. These institutions have not only been facing massive fund cuts, arrests of academicians who question the regime but also a systematic effort to saffronize the curriculum to complement the ideological affiliations of the regime.

Recent in this series are the changes made in the syllabus of the Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut. Based on the decision of the board of studies, thoughts, and teachings of people like UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Jaggi Vasudev, Yoga practitioner, and businessman Ramdev will be taught in the university. Books written by them along with others have been included in the syllabus. These personalities are directly or indirectly part of BJP-RSS combine and share the ideologies of the ruling party.

Yogi’s Hath Yoga form and practice, published by the Gorakhnath Trust Fund will be taught. Ramdev’s Yoga Sadhana and Yoga Medicine will be included in the BA Philosophy syllabus. Along with that, the course will also have Yoga practical as well as theory. Even though certain BA philosophy courses in the country teach Yoga theory but Yoga practical is new and its necessity for the course is yet to be explained. Apart from these poems of Kuwar Bechain and Bashir Badr’s Urdu work has been included in Hindi literature.

Apart from these changes, Dr. D.N Singh, the Convenor of the Meerut university has informed that 30% of the curriculum will be covered by two minor papers namely, applied ethics and applied philosophy. The Isha Kriya Sadhna by Jaggi Vasudev will also be taught as part of these papers, he added.

The syllabus of the BSc course has been changed as well. Indian origin mathematicians like Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Lilavati, Ramanuj, Madhwacharya, etc, and their contributions will be taught. The explanation for such a move by the university was that earlier the syllabus focused more on the contributions of foreign mathematicians.
