Former Punjab chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday returned Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in protest against “betrayal of farmers” by the Centre.
On September 17th, Shiromani Akali Dal’s leader and Cabinet Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Union Government. Akali dal has been compelled to withdraw from NDA. There is a split in the party too.
This should come as a shock to NDA as more of its allies are expressing displeasure over the farm bills being bulldozed by the BJP led NDA. This was in protest the controversial “anti-farmer” agricultural legislations and was supported by SAD.
Punjab farmers have been at the forefront of the anti farm bills struggle and have gheraoed the capital city Delhi. Today is the 8th day of the protest. Delhi Police and Indian central government tried to stop the farmers from entering Delhi so now the farmers from different states have surrounded the city. One round of talks with central govt ministers have failed and farmers are meeting again today with the central government leadership.
So far farmers from Rajasthan, UP, Uttarakhand and Punjab are part of the struggle. Due to this being sowing season in other states only some have joined from other states.
Struggle in Punjab is going since two months with whole hearted support from the public. In 40 places intense struggles going on in Punjab. In all railway stations invariably.
People of Punjab have forced the political parties to take a stand, whole of Punjab is converted into an arena of struggle.
