Congress leader moves Delhi High Court seeking postponement of assembly elections in 5 States

The assembly elections in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa are scheduled to start from next month and will continue till March.

A public interest litigation (PIL) petition has been filed before the Delhi High Court seeking postponement of the upcoming assembly elections in five States in view of the rising wave of the Corona virus’ Omicron variant.

The assembly elections in the States of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa are scheduled to start from next month and will continue till March. The results of the elections will be declared on March 10.

The petition before the High Court has been moved by Congress leader Jagdish Sharma through advocates Rudra Vikram Singh and Manish Kumar.

The plea sought a direction to the Election Commission to defer the elections for a few months while also seeking a mandatory quarantine of people returning from poll-bound States.

The plea prayed that a direction be issued to the Central government and the State of Delhi to submit details of their plans as to how they will deal with the shortage of Oxygen and distribute essential supplies and services during the third wave of the pandemic.

Petitions seeking postponement of elections were earlier moved before the Allahabad and Uttarakhand High Courts by other persons. Both these Courts, had, however, refused to defer the elections.
