Indian Student Killed in Shelling in Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Says MEA

The student has been identified as Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, 20, from Karnataka. He was a fourth-year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University in Kharkiv.

An Indian student was killed today in Ukraine’s Kharkiv amid the ongoing Russian invasion, the Ministry of External Affairs said. The MEA added that the ministry is in touch with the family of the student.

“With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family.” the Ministry of External Affairs said today.

Further, Bagchi wrote: “Foreign Secretary is calling in Ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine to reiterate our demand for urgent safe passage for Indian nationals who are still in Kharkiv and cities in other conflict zones. Similar action is also being undertaken by our Ambassadors in Russia and Ukraine.”

The student has been identified as Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, 20, from Karnataka. He was a fourth-year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University in Kharkiv.

“Naveen was shot dead around 10.30 am Ukrainian time today. He was standing in the queue before a grocery shop when the Russian army fired at people. We have no information about his body. None of us was able to visit the hospital, probably where it is kept now,” said Sridharan Gopalakrishnan, who was Naveen’s hostel mate.

Following the death of the student in shelling, India has called upon Russia and Ukraine reiterating its demands for ensuring urgent and safe passage of all Indian nationals in Ukraine.

“The Foreign Secretary is calling in Ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine to reiterate our demand for urgent safe passage for Indian nationals who are still in Kharkiv and cities in other conflict zones. Similar action is also being undertaken by our Ambassadors in Russia and Ukraine.”, the Ministry of External Affairs tweeted.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basvaraj Bommai while speaking to the media has expressed his sorrow at the death of the young man. He assured that he has requested PMO and MEA to help in recovering his body of the student from Ukraine.
