Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi visited the victims of clash over the Sonbhadra land dispute at BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi. She wanted to meet the victims of the firing at Ghorawal village where she was stopped to meet the family members, after which she sat on Dharna. She was moved from the protest site. Section 144 has been imposed in Sonbhadra.
Yesterday, the village chief and his associates opened fire on a group of tribals killing 10 people over a land dispute. A total of 26 people have been arrested.
The dispute is about 36-acre land that tribals have been tilling for generations and have been demanding titles (Patta) for it. The main accused, village chief claimed he had bought the land 10 years ago from a prominent local family.
The state’s scheduled tribe commission has taken cognizance of the matter and decided to send a team to the spot.
Opposition members have raised concern over the deteriorating law and order condition in the state. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also termed the killing of the villagers in UP as “shocking” and criticized the Yogi Adityanath-led government over the spate of murders in the state.
“Under the BJP government, the confidence of criminals has grown so much that murders are being committed in daylight. In Sonbhadra, the killing of 9 people, including three women, belonging to the Gond community has shaken the conscience. The chief minister, his ministers, and the administration are all sleeping. Is this how the state will become crime-free?” she said in a tweet in Hindi.
