Hours after four farmers were allegedly mowed down by the Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra in Lakhimpur Khiri on Sunday – a video started doing rounds in social media in which Ajay Mishra can be seen threatening farmers.

“I want to tell these people (farmers)…Either correct yourself or I will correct you in just two minutes. I am not only MP or Minister or MLA…Those who know me before me becoming MLA or the minister know that I do not run away from challenges,” Mishra said in the video that was shared by the AAP leader Sanjay Singh on Twitter.

According to a local journalist, the video that was shot some 20-days prepared ground for the Sunday violence which recorded at least 8 deaths including four BJP workers. Over a dozen, as per the police, got injured during the violence.

Facing government apathy, as per sources, the video irked farmers – who have been protesting against the farm laws for last 9 months – so much so that they showed Mishra black flags in his home turf which Mishra “took as an open challenge to his authority”

“Drunk on power the Minister and his son – in order to teach protesting farmers a lesson – run over them,” alleged a BKU leader.

But this was not the first time when Mishra hogged headlines for wrong reasons.

Farmer Organisations Demand Arrest of Central Minister Ajay Mishra

A lawyer by profession, Ajay Mishra has more interest in wrestling (in real fights) than legal battles, said a former MLA who inducted him in politics in late 80s.

On Sunday Ajay Mishra organised a Dangal in his village in which UP deputy chief minister was invited as the chief guest. Mishra and his son along with his convoy were going to receive Maurya when incident took place.

Mishra who is known as Bahubali in the region, and is alleged to have been involved in dubious businesses also.

His opponent, former Congress MLA from Nighasan, Satish Ajmani claimed that Mishra started his career with Congress but left soon to join the BJP.

Due to his “criminal activities and Bahubali image” he had to leave the party, said Ajmani.

“Mishra was one of the main accused in the murder of a Congressman Santosh Gupta’s son in 2002, but he was aquitted by the local court apparently due to lack of the evidence in 2004.” said Ajmani over the phone.

When asked about his son Ashish who is absconding since the incident, Ajmani said, like father like son.

“Nighasan assembly seat is located near Nepal border. The 100 km long border makes it a perfect place for smuggling and other illegal activities,” alleged another Congress activist over the phone, adding Mishra has been involved in many cross border, illlegal trades.

Mishra was first elected from the Nighasan assembly seat in 2012.  Then he won Lok Sabha polls in 2014, defeating BSP candidate Anand Giri. In 2019, he defeated the SP candidate by more than one lakh votes.

As per the BJP insiders, Mishra who started his career as a small-time office-bearer in BJP’s district office after leaving Congress is considered close to the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his MLA son Pankaj Singh.

Though Mishra has claimed that his son was not present on the spot when violence broke out, farmers’ leaders accused him of instigating the violence.

After procrastinating in the beginning though the polic has lodged an FIR naming Ashish Mishra, the sacking of the Minister from the Modi cabinet is still to be done.

The Opposition and the farmers’ organizations will not leave the ground unless Modi sacks his Bahubali Minister, said a BKU leader.
