Trade Union Leaders Detained in Delhi in the Day of Chakka Jam

This protest was a joint protest of all trade unions, student organisations, women organisations, democratic rights organizations done under the banner of #DelhiForFarmers.

The Delhi Police has detained several trade union leaders today. Group of trade unions, student organizations and women’s groups had planned to do a gathering and protest at Shaheedi Park, ITO today, to show solidarity with the farmers’ Chakka Jam.

At 3 pm, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation has posted on Twitter that around 50 people have been detained from Shaheedi Park, ITO, including their member Sucheta De and Prasenjit. Students’ Federation of India Delhi has also posted about the detention of its members.

Speaking to Gauri Lankesh News, Nayan of Mazdoor Sahyog Kendra in the morning had said that the Delhi Police was given a notice about the solidarity protest beforehand, but since last night itself they have been actively trying to pick trade union leaders up and detain them. “Vipin, who is the secretary of North Delhi CITU, he was taken to Badli Police Station. AIUTUC State Secretary Manager Chaurasia, has put under house arrest after being surrounded by police. In the morning at 5, Delhi State Secretary of IFTU, Comrade Animesh, was picked up from his house at C.R Park. Comrade Poonam Kaushik, of Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan, also related to IFTU, police is outside her home. Surya Prakash of AICCTU, has been picked up by the police too,” he has said.

He continues, “All these leaders have been detained for a public program which was not even a Chakka Jam. It was a peaceful protest inside the Shaheedi Park, where many events happen. Police has given no explanation whatsoever for these detentions, but it is for today’s program. It is basically to prevent workers from showing solidarity with farmers”.
